How Does This Even Happen?

Mom-to-Be Mistakenly Given Abortion Drug

I don't usually blog about other people's business, but this should be everyone's business.

A 19-year-old first time mom was accidentally given an abortion drug today, mistakenly believing it was an antibiotic. She is 6 weeks pregnant. This is what happens when we live in a world where one little pill can end a life.

Safeway's statement:

"We have extended our sincere apologies to Ms. Silva and offered to pay any medical expenses incurred as a result of the prescription error. We understand the anxiety this has caused and the difficulty of Ms. Silva's situation."

You understand the anxiety? Doubt it. And medical expenses?? Is that truly the depth of their remorse? Money just can't buy you out of this one. As any mother can attest, I am sure medical expenses are the least of her worries right now.

This is gut wrenching, heart wrenching, and everything in between, and I won't even profess to fathom what this poor young woman must be going through tonight.

A couple of things cross my mind: first, loathsome thoughts towards the woman for whom this drug was intended (the patient's names were confused.) Second, why wasn't there any form of communication between the pharmacist and the mother? I know I can't even go pick up an antibiotic for an ear infection without the pharmacist wanting to consult with me. How is it that this drug was so casually passed across the counter without any discussion of its intended use? The bottle should've been labeled with a skull and crossbones.

There is nothing you could say to make this situation any better. May we all pray fervently that this story will have a happy outcome and that baby will be okay. This is maddening.
